About NARRATED OBJECTS
Founded by: Teena Apeles and Andrea Richards
Founded in: 2016
Founded in 2016, Narrated Objects is a creative collective of writers, editors, designers, and artists who develop unique projects to benefit causes close to their hearts. With each project they aim to provide an outlet for new voices, to enrich lives through storytelling, and to partner with organizations doing good.
The idea for Narrated Objects came about after founder Teena Apeles and creative partner Andrea Richards discovered Teena’s great aunt’s collection of vintage slides based on her travels from all over the world in the ’50s and ’60s. Teena thought, “Wow, these moments need to be shared,” and Narrated Objects was born in Los Angeles.
“Los Angeles is easily one of the most misunderstood cities in the world, which actually makes it also one of the coolest places to explore. It’s a city of amazing intersections and collisions—of cultures, classes, industries, histories, architecture, and terrain—where anything is possible,” noted Teena and Andrea. That’s what drives them: the spirit of creativity that is in the air as much as jacaranda blossoms, the scent of white sage, or smog. They feel the energy here is special, different, unpredictable… and these extreme emotions can produce some really interesting work, and even more interesting collaborations.
Their We Heart P-22 book is an example of this. It may appear to be just a kids’ coloring book on the surface, but it’s actually a collaboration of more than 50 individuals of all ages and walks of life who came together to tell the story of a lone mountain lion that managed to cross two of the country’s busiest freeways to live in Griffith Park. Where else could something so unusual happen—and that millions of people would celebrate such an achievement?
“P-22 is very much an ‘only in L.A.’ story, and we are so proud to be part of LA Original.” – Teena and Andrea
