About P.F. Candle Co.
Founded by Kristen Pumphery in 2008, P.F. Candle Co. grew out of the DIY spirit that’s been with Kristen her entire life. Kristen has always been making things—she has knitted, sewed, made candles, refurbished furniture, and even ran a blog-tuned-Etsy-shop called Pommes Frites where she would document and sell her DIY projects such as hollow books safes, pins, handmade pillows and candles.
After creating and selling such successful DIY projects, Kristen quickly realized that there weren’t many handmade, affordable and well-designed candles on the market, and candles were consistently the largest part of her sales. Therefore, she began to focus solely on candle making and eventually founded P.F. Candle Co. In 2013, her husband and now business partner, Thomas Neuberger, came on board, and it started the rapid expansion of their business. P.F. Camndle Co. is now a team of 22 that designs, makes, sells, and ships everything under one roof in an old screen-printing factory in Boyle Heights.
P.F. Candle Co.’s candle scents are inspired by Kristen’s and her husband’s own memories. Each scent tells the story of the time period in which it was created. For example, Golden Coast, their coastal California-inspired scent, evokes memories of a trip to Big Sur: the babbling Big Sur river, surrounded by redwoods, and hiking trails along sunny, wild-sage filled slopes.
When it comes to materials, P.F. Candle Co. is passionate about sustainability and re-use. Using soy wax as an alternative to paraffin, P.F. Candle Co. is able to remain true to their values of sustainability and reuse, as soy wax makes candles that burn cleaner and longer, release less particulate matter, and is a renewable resource.
P.F.’s aesthetic is simple and gender-neutral, making for products that are meant to be an everyday luxury, not a showpiece.
Kristen describes LA as a “creative force field.” They find LA’s energy to be laid back, and not glossy, but still one that gets things done.
